At Therapy Dog Training UK, we believe that a great therapy dog starts with a great trainer. But what exactly makes someone a good therapy dog trainer? It’s about more than just loving dogs — although that’s a big part of it! Here’s what we look for in the trainers we trust to help build calm, confident, and compassionate therapy dog teams.
1. Qualified and Personally Assessed
A good therapy dog trainer should be professionally qualified by a reputable dog training organisation. But beyond that, it’s important that they’ve been assessed in person — not just on paper. We make sure our Trusted Trainers have been seen in action. Their skills, handling techniques, and the bond they have with their own dogs all speak volumes.

2. Positive Reinforcement is a Must
Force-free, reward-based training is the gold standard. Our trainers use positive reinforcement techniques, like clicker training or marker words paired with appropriate rewards for the individual dog, whether it is high value treats or special toy this helps build trust and encourages dogs to offer the behaviors we want, without fear or pressure.
3. Skilled in Multiple Methods
There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to training. Our trainers are experienced in a variety of force-free techniques — including shaping, capturing, and luring — and know when to use each method to help individual dogs succeed in a kind and effective way.

4. Kindness and Empathy
A great trainer isn’t just good with dogs — they’re compassionate toward people too. Empathy is essential when supporting dog guardians on their training journey, especially when preparing for the special role of therapy work. We love trainers who are naturally kind, patient, and genuinely care about every animal and human they work with.
5. Knowledgeable and Observant
Understanding dog body language is crucial. A good therapy dog trainer can read subtle signals and adjust their approach to keep every dog feeling safe and comfortable. They also stay up to date with the latest knowledge in dog welfare and behavior science.
6. Clear, Friendly Communicators
Training is a team effort! That’s why we value trainers who communicate clearly and kindly with dog guardians. Whether it’s explaining techniques or offering support after a tough session, the best trainers are approachable, encouraging, and always happy to help.
7. Passionate About Therapy Work
Our trainers don’t just teach — they inspire. They’re passionate about the healing power of therapy animals and proudly support the mission of Therapy Dog Training UK. Whether they’re guiding dogs through our Temperament Assessment or helping handlers earn their Training Award, they’re dedicated to making a difference.

Want to Work As A Trusted Trainer?
At Therapy Dog Training UK, all of our Trusted Trainers meet the highest standards of skill, kindness, and professionalism. If you are a trainer who shares our values — we’d love to hear from you!
